    Topics we discussed:

    • Does it take time for players on a baseball team to gel as a team, like it often does in hockey or football?
    • The Atlanta Braves are off to a great start. The Blue Jays, not so much.
    • A number of trade deals happened before the NHL trade deadline. Among these: Iginla goes to Boston Pittsburgh. Kiprusoff is retiring after this season.
    • Toronto didn’t trade for a goalie. Vancouver didn’t trade Luongo.
    • MarchApril Madness – sadly, we didn’t get most of it on TV here.
    • Sailing – The America’s Cup is coming up.

    Play

Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio has become Pope Francis, and so we present a special, joint episode of The SportsFathers and Hot Cup of Ministry!

(There’s not much sports talk in this one, but historic events like the election of a new Pope don’t come all that often! We promise to get back in to the sports podcasting after Easter! (It’s a tad busy for priests during this time of Lent.))

Here are a couple of the things we talk about:

    HABEMVS PAPAM! What’s your story?

    popefrancis-photo-background

Pope Francis has been elected! Share your story!

What an exciting past few days! We naturally want to talk about it and so we’re planning to record a new joint episode of Hot Cup of Ministry and The SportsFathers early next week.

But we also want to hear from you and share YOUR stories. What was your experience of the conclave? Where were you when you heard about the white smoke and the name of our new Pope? What were your impressions of his first public words and actions as Holy Father?

Let us know! We’d love to be able to read or listen to your comments.

How can I share my story?

    There are a few options:

We are hoping to record early next week, so if you get your comments to us this weekend there’s a good chance we’ll include it in the show!

Another shot of the dome of St. Peter's, later in the dayJoin Frs. Darryl, Geoffrey, Andrew, and Travis as we got together for an in-person podcast in Saskatoon! Today we recap Super Bowl XLVII, look at the NHL season, and talk about a small sort of news story that broke today in Rome. (It’s about Pope Benedict XVI.)

What do you think of the Super Bowl? The half-time show? And, most importantly, about Pope Benedict stepping down?

    Play

Join Frs. Andrew, Darryl, and Travis as we talk about the NHL season, goings-on in the CFL, and Super Bowl 47!

    Topics we discussed:

    • Thanks so much to everyone for listening & for your feedback! We love to hear from you!
    • Seminarian Michael sent us a note about Kelly Olynyk from Kamloops, BC. Olynyk has been tearing it up in NCAA basketball at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
    • We discuss the start to the NHL season. Some surprises!
    • What did you think of Nail Yakupov’s goal celebration?
    • Fr. Travis is a definite Luongo fan.
    • CFL News: BC released some players, traded receiver Geroy Simon to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and QB Mike Reilly to the Edmonton Eskimos.
    • What should Ottawa’s new CFL team be called? Rough Riders (the old name) is apparently off the table.
    • Super Bowl 47: We’re looking forward to a shootout! Should be a great game.
    • Fr. Andrew snuck in the 2009 Grey Cup game (which Fr. Darryl maintains didn’t happen)
    • We give Fr. Geoff a hard time for not being on the show again. :) (He *is* doing important work though!)
    • Beyoncé is doing the half time show. We think that’s better than Justin Bieber, who played at half time during the 2012 Grey Cup. But only marginally.

What are your picks to win the Super Bowl? Ours are:

  • Fr. Travis: 49ers
  • Fr. Andrew: 49ers
  • Fr. Darryl: 49ers
  • Fr. Geoff: Ravens

hockeystickJoin Frs. Andrew, Darryl, and Travis as we talk about the new NHL season, the Stanley Cup champion (this year and 1993), NFL and CFL news, and Lance Armstrong. It’s all coming up… next!

    Topics we discussed:

    • The NHL season kicks off on the 19th! We we we so excited!
    • The Toronto Maple Leafs have had some GM drama of late.
    • The Montreal Canadiens won in 1993, thereby ruining the Stanley Cup for the rest of the Canadian teams. Or so it seems that way. (Marty McSorley’s illegal stick didn’t help matters much, sadly.)
    • Who will win the Stanley Cup this year? Who will represent the East and West in the Stanley Cup finals this year? See below for our picks – and share your own in the comment section!
    • The NFL playoffs had a couple of amazingly exciting game finishes!
    • Marc Trestman, enormously successful head coach of the Montreal Alouettes for 5 years, has landed the HC job with the Chicago Bears. He’s taking some more CFL talent with him, including the assistant HC from the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
    • Arland Bruce III and Byron Parker have been released from the BC Lions (!!)
    • This is a fake bullet point we found on the internet.
    • Lance Armstrong. ‘Nuff said.

What are your predictions for the East and West representatives in the Stanley Cup Finals? Ours are:

  • Fr. Travis: Boston / Vancouver
  • Fr. Andrew: Detroit / Washington
  • Fr. Darryl: New York Rangers / Vancouver

IMG00012BREAKING NEWS from the NHL: After 113 long days, the lockout is now… over!

Join Frs. Andrew, Darryl, Travis, and Geoffrey in the discussion!

    Topics we discussed:

    • The NHL season will likely be 48 games long, and teams will only play within their conference.
    • We talk about the Canadian NHL teams. We have a bit of a battle of Alberta going on: Fr. Andrew is a fan of the Oilers, while Frs. Travis, Geoff, and Darryl cheer for the Flames. (Go Flames!)
    • Don Fehr and Gary Bettman: Will they be around when the new CBA runs its course?
    • NHL and its fans: Canadian fans will probably come back eventually. TV deals in the USA may be a challenge with all these labour disruptions.
    • A possible olive branch to the fans is being thrown around: Make the NHL Centre Ice Package free this season for watching all the games.
    • Toronto has already lost a game (Winter Classic) and has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. ;-)
    • Shout out to @Armdog (Colby Armstrong)
    • Montreal Canadiens – shout out to the many fans. Hopefully we don’t get too much hate mail from all of them…
    • The successes (or otherwise) of athletes named Todd
    • Football: The Vikings and the college bowl games
    • Alabama hung on for the win over Notre Dame
    • R.A. Dickey was introduced as a new pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays.
